You don't need a gaming rig to make Minecraft beautiful. Here are the best lightweight, free shaders — and how to run them smoothly.
Shaders transform Minecraft with real shadows, glowing water and volumetric light — but many are brutal on weaker hardware. The good news: several excellent shaders are built specifically to run fast, and they're completely free.
First, install a shader loader
Vanilla Minecraft can't run shaders on its own. You need one of these:
- Iris — the modern choice. It runs alongside Sodium (a rendering-performance mod), so you often gain FPS *and* get shaders. Grab both from our Mods page.
- OptiFine — the older all-in-one option. Simpler, but generally slower than Iris + Sodium.

Quick performance tips
- Lower your render distance to 8–12 chunks.
- Turn clouds off and reduce entity distance.
- Close background apps — shaders are GPU-hungry.
- Start with the shader's "low" or "fast" preset, then raise settings until frames dip.
